Air Care In Vain
So, what's the real reason for air care? It is supposed to be a regulatory vehicle inspection in order to reduce emissions. Is it really to reduce smog or pollution, or is it to make sure big cities only have nice new cars on the roads? I was driving along in the big city and noticed that all of the cars were rather new. Most were no more than 10 years old, at least.
Back in the smaller towns, where there is no air care requirement, I would see plenty of "rust buckets" puffing away down the street. The majority of those were huge king-cab trucks with rust so bad that you could see right through the gaping holes on the sides. These small town vehicles had to be pouring out pollution as they rambled down the street. So really, how does that reduce pollution?
Sure small towns have smaller populations, which means less vehicles on the road, but the few vehicles that are on the road are devastating on the environment. I'm not advocating air care in the smaller towns, mind you, because I don't exactly enjoy taking my vehicle in every year for a "checkup" and wouldn't want to enforce that pain in the butt on anyone else, either.
I just really don't think that air care is set up to help the environment, it is really just to make the big city look nicer to tourists. Who wants to come to our fair city and see yellowish tinged, big-honkin' trucks putting down the street? Nobody, so let's send those pitiful vehicles to the small towns where tourism isn't thriving.

Air care in BC doesn't even generate revenue for the province. It operates to only break even. Stupid thing is all new cars produced don't fail, yet they still have to pass the stupid air care. The reason for its entire existence is becoming obsolete.

My car is 38 years old so doesn't have to pass that particular test. Go figure! If a car here is 25 years old or older they're exempt from emissions testing. I guess they don't think there are enough of them left on the roads to worry about.

It's laughable, as it's too easy to fool the testing equipment or circumvent the requirement to have it done, if you wish to. As such, it has become just another cash grab.
