Kia Sportage Commercial
Can anyone explain that stinkin' Kia Sportage commercial to me?
It's the one where someone drives the car a little ways, gets out, and throws the keys to someone else. That someone else gets in, drives a little, gets out, throws the keys to someone else. And it continues until the end of the commercial.
Nobody seems to want the car. It's like they test drive it and say "no thanks" and pass it on to someone else. What were they thinking when they made up this commercial?
The Crazy Rants of Samantha Burns

Comments
I can't answer that question but I just came over to thank Samanth's Rant. I just popped up to Slithery Reptile and I am one maybe two links from the next class up.
No WAY could I have done it this fast without this blog.
I cannot remember how I got here in the first place but linking here was the best move I have made so far!
You have a GREAT community of blogs that link and come in here and they seem to support each other.

Maybe it is an elaborate auto theft where they figure if they cover their tracks well enough, they can pull it off.

It is stupid advertising.
After I saw it a few times I think they are trying to say that their car lasts a long time. These are owners passing it on to a new owner?
nice rant.

I think it's supposed to mean that the Kia is for EVERYONE and not just for a few people; thus, the keys are symbolically passed on to everyone in all kinds of different walks of life.
Personally, I think whoever designs ANY commerical needs to stop smoking crack. Anyone who has driven a Kia knows the first thing you want to do is toss the keys to the next random person you see.....

The theme is "KIA Sportage: Great for anyone, in any walk of life".
That's why all the people that exchange the car are "seemingly opposites" of each other.
The theme is catchy, it focuses your attention on the screen, then you watch a series of different stereotypes driving the car and having a pleasurable experience.
The designers of the ad are trying to tap into the awareness of each of the generic stereotypes they present.

It's that each person drives the car until it breaks down then abandons it, and there's a team of Kia mechanics following it around trying to pass it off on the next unsuspecting mug...

For years, we have been adopting early Pauly Shore vocabulary for laughs - so that we would comment on the "greenage" and the "fruitage" and the "slumage." When we saw the ad, we laughed so hard that we missed the commercial the first few times. "Sportage?" hee hee hee
I'm guessing that it is supposed to represent freedom, opportunity, a smooth going with the flow as the ownership moves from one to the next. Obviously, it's a flawed idea if no-one gets the mood.

I own a 2006 Sportage and saw that commercial. The ad is a bit crazy but it falls into a new category of commercials, which tell a story of some sort. Women like story ads. If you watch the whole thing, you sit thru commercials often. The average person won't see the whole thing. The average person is looking for themselfves driving the car in the ad. The demographics of the driver changes to appeal to the most people possible. Like a checkmark down the age, color, and gender columns of a form. I think it's better than having multiple vehicles in the ad, which make the vehicle less unique.
I have had no repair issues. hyundai is in charge now.

Well its 2007 and Kia is still blaring that stupid commercial over the TV airwaves. Some interesting commentary here though surprised no one shares my displeasure over the soundtrack. What strikes me is the sheer arrogance of Kia to suggest that my life is not great, but if I want it to be, I need to acknowledge the importance of the Sportage and buy one. The voice at the end says "the SUV with everything, now is for everyone." Its so utterly ridiculous that simply saying it with a straight face is some sort of blasphemy. Most ads try to soothe, trick, humor, or pummel you into thinking "hey there could be something to this product, I should check it out". But Kia has taken it to another level. Their product is unequivocally required for superior quality of life. When western society crashes it won't be in small part because its citizens squander their energies on pursuit of the trivial as exhalted by marketing.

And who is that hot blonde on the new Kia commercial with her boyfriend/husband who find that the Kia Sportage is a "match" for them?
