We've all heard the phrase "blood, it's in us to give", but I am so dreadfully afraid of needles, that whenever I hear that phrase, I shout out, "No, it's in me to live".

I have O negative blood and the blood banks love me. I get postcards in the mail offering me various "prizes" for coming in to donate, calls reminding me to donate etc. One hospital that was a customer of mine even sent you cholesterol results in addition to a gift each time you gave blood. That hospital personally calls each donor - it's amazing.

I'm not afraid of needles, but I have touchy blood pressure and faint at the drop of a hat (or rather, at the draw of a needle). As I'm sure you realize, though, donating blood is not a threat to your life or even much of one to your health. I make up for the guilt of not donating blood -- of being a free-rider on those who do donate and whose blood I'll be happy to take when I need it -- by being an organ donor.
