Toyota Technology
Apparently, the Toyota Lexus will have a new image-processing computer system in their new cars. At least, this will be for the cars in Japan; there is no word if it will be sold elsewhere.
As Science News Daily informs us, Toyota is installing an image-processor with a camera placed near the steering wheel to detect when the driver stops looking straight ahead.
"When the eyes start to drift away from the road, lights go off and a beeping sounds is emitted."
I don't quite get how this system will work, but it will be interesting. What happens when you need to look left to right at the stop sign or shoulder check? Is it on a timer which allows you so many seconds before it goes off on you? What happens when you're at a stop light and just want to look around or talk with a friend? You know you have at least a minute to wait for that blasted light, so why bother looking straight ahead?
Talk about efforts in idiot-proofing vehicles. Is it really wise for us to aid the incompetent drivers out there with computer technology?
There would be a bunch of morons putting on lipstick while driving or yapping on cell phones while looking around at the people walking by, thinking that the car will let them know when to look back onto the road.
What happens if this technology fails on them? Where would we be? If the computer fails, those people would be busy gawking around, thinking they can because the computer will remind them to look straight ahead, and then BAM, they crash into something.
Shouldn't we just let them crash and deal with it, although I also don't want to be the one rear-ended by some 'tard who's busy looking about rather than driving.

What if you suffer from myopia? Can the beeping be modified to account for that?

Some idiot will be looking off to the side and crash in to something then sue Toyota for not being properly warned. This seems like more trouble than it's worth.

If you're worried that people will stop looking at the road b/c they assume the car will tell them when to look at the road, you probably also should advocate against cruise-control, which stupid people may use and then fall asleep or stop paying attention.
