It's The Little Things
Contributed by New Victorian
I just moved from Juneau, Alaska to Reno, Nevada. While both are technically in the United States of America, you might say there are some serious cultural differences; for those readers of this fine blog who have never experienced these locales, I present a little compare and contrast for your edification:
Juneau – people drive 55 in the left hand lane of the only divided highway.
Reno – people drive 55 on sidewalk.
Juneau – everyone knows someone who died in avalanche, air crash or by boat sinking.
Reno – everyone knows someone with a Hummer.
Juneau – offbeat entertainment…porcupine watching.
Reno – offbeat entertainment…demolition-of-old-motel watching.
Juneau – more offbeat entertainment…tourists in matching track suits.
Reno – more offbeat entertainment…guys in greasy coats and hats on hot days.
Juneau – personal snow plows.
Reno – valet parking.
Juneau – drunks asleep at bus stop.
Reno – drunks asleep at bus stop.
Well, some things are universal. I’ll bet there are drunks asleep at bus stops in Moscow and Sao Paulo and Dubuque as well.
I’ve decided I like both places, but only in Reno can you get Krispy Kreme, topless dancers or a shoeshine. It’s the little thing that make the difference.

Don't forget East Hastings street in Vancouver, Canada, although those drunks are everywhere not just near bus stops.
Ya, and I'll bet in Reno you can get all three of those things at the same time.

Actually, Reno is late in getting Krispy Kreme. That company was started in Winston-Salem, NC over 50 years ago. Now, Krispy Kremes, topless dancers AND a shoe shine is a combination most likely unique to Reno.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Krispy Kreme will be making an appearance in Juneau since they declared bankruptcy (KK not Juneau).
So drunks at bus stops are universal? I believe you're right. They're definitely present here in Philadelphia (not like that's a stretch of the imagination).

in Moscow, the drunks don't sleep. If they did, the entire city wouldn't move.

Must visit Vancouver to check that out. I've heard there are some other attractions, as well.
One more thing about Juneau--it must be the only place in the world where Burger King and Wendy's both failed and closed down. Talk about a tough crowd to please...

Not to mention the K-Mart in Juneau closing without there even being a Walmart in town to drive them out of business.
I'll bet one of the most popular attractions in Reno is NOT a fish hatchery.....
