Blog

"Someone"s all proud of themself for finally learning where the term "blog" originated.

For those who didn't know, "blog" is short for web log, they just took off "w" and "e".

Is there anyone out there who knows where the term "blog" originated?

And, if you find it's something boring like Microsoft coined the term, then can you make up something cool or outrageous to share with us?

I'm certain it started with some of the early bloggers like Glenn Reynolds and Michele Catalano. They were blogging five years ago before things went haywire. Surely one of them came up with it.

The term predates either Instapundit (heck, I predate Instapundit) or A Small Victory. Jorn Barger's Robot Wisdom was the first to use the term "weblog," way back in 1997, and he was using the abbreviated version "blog" at least by his 9/99 FAQ.

Hate to disagree with Charles, of all people, but you're all wrong. The word "blog" actually originated IN A SUPERMAN COMIC. In 1959.

Hope that's cool enough for you, Sam. (And I added you to my blogroll.)

Comes from the first free weblog service to ever grace the internet, which was called Weeblog, then it became a general term known as weblog, then just blog.

I like the 1959 superman comic mention better...

MisterSnitch - that's pretty darn cool, I'll go with that one, lol, and ditto to blogrolling.

Personally, I think "blog" is the sound that came out of my mouth one night after eating a jar of pickled eggs and a brick of limburger cheese, drinking a 26er of vodka and rootbeer mix, and jumping on a trampoline for 4 hours straight.

Boy, I'd hate to be the one to have to clean up that mess.

Children, children! The word "blog" was invented by none other than myself when I was sitting cross-legged, meditating with one eye open. In the silver haze, these mystical phrases came to me as I descended into higher states of unconsciousness:

Blatantly Lifeless Opinionated Geeks
Broke Losers Of Gondor
Bearded Ladies Of Germany
Bottles Left On Grass

In my greatest wisdom, I foresaw that these great words would describe some of the things and people that will feature in a great revolution of the internet kind.

Sagely, I summarised the greatness into the acronym B.L.O.G, but my Caps Lock key broke in mid-meditation so I opted for "blog" and thus it all began.

PS: if you'd like my autograph, please stand in the queue. I'll be tackling world peace next. Thank you for flying Maphia Airlines.

I don't agree with that definition :)
Blog is an anagram of glob.
Better yet i think blog means "Best Laughs of Glob". Have a nice day.

To pick the most infinitesimal nit, I didn't claim that Barger had invented the word "blog," only that he was using it as an abbreviation for "weblog."

Otherwise, one should never, ever bet against Mister Snitch.

Most people who don't read blogs, and only hear about them, think that the word is "BLOB". =^..^=
