Selfish? Yes.
In this lovey-dovey time of giving and caring, I thought I'd share this classic.
We've all heard the phrase "blood, it's in us to give", but I am so dreadfully afraid of needles, that whenever I hear that phrase, I shout out, "No, it's in me to live".

I've never been big on needles. I've donated a couple of times, but not enough to get a mug or anything.

I donated twice. The first time was spontaneous, no problem. Second time I prepped for it by eating and drinking extra, and end up in bad shape. I looked at the Red Cross person and told her to put the blood back in, then kind of passed out. They kept the blood, I got a sandwich.

Speaking of needles in the butt, I get to get one in January when I get around to it. But I'm a little behind.

Yeah, no needles for me. I used to be OK with it until one nice fellow that had never taken blood before stuck a needle in one side and out the other of the big vein in my arm. That wasn't so bad but it freaked him out and he pulled it up in a way that the needle cut a slit right across the vein.
I don't know what happened...lost too much blood and everything went bright white. They said I threatened to kill the guy but I don't remember that.

My husband gives blood as often as they let him. I think he has a thing going on with one of the nurses at the Blood Center. Oh well. I've got a bunch of free T-shirts out of the deal.

I give blood regularly when circumstances allow. I haven't been able to give lately because I've somehow become anemic and need to pile on the leafy greens a little more. And I eat a lot of them anyway.
I'd been trying to get my 19 year old to give blood (he's young, he can part with some), but like a lot of people, he's afraid of needles to the point of hysteria. He's been like that ever since he realized about getting immunizations invloved a needle and nurses who "reassured" him that "it won't hurt a bit." Hell, I don't mind needles at all and I'll be the first one to tell you getting stuck with a needle fuckin' hurts!

I gave nine pints in my youth and stopped because I'm not into pain. (There may have been some problem with my veins, I forget.) Anyway -- For a brief time the slogan was "Recycle life, give blood!" and I never did find occasion to use my version, "Recycle life, eat meat!"
