Getting Lay'd
I just saw a new Lays potato chip commercial that gave me a little giggle.
If you haven't seen it, it displays a man tipping a bag of Lays over into a bowl, but it takes forever to get one chip out.
Their claim is that there is more flavour in every bag, or something like that.
All I could think of is, ya, they're getting that stingy to the point of only putting in one chip per bag. What a rip off these chip companies are getting.
A big frickin' bag that's only half full (or it's half empty) seems to be the standard these days, which is very deceptive promotion.
Although we know the bag is only half full (or half empty), we tend to perceive that there is more to it because the bag is so frickin' huge.

Blame the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration): they now require chips to come with their own air bags.

Always wonder about this. Why DOES it require a bag the size of Mount Everest to package 28 chips? I understand the concept of "air cushioning," but seriously, people...

Reminds me of an old post of mine:
My Lady just asked me, “Want a Baked Lay?
What I heard: “Wanna get high and have sex?

JJ - I remember that one.
As for the air packing, what does it take, 20 pounds of air per chip? Sure they inflate to protect the chips, but I have little doubt that they overinflate just to make the bags look bigger.

I would like to have a bag of chips large enough to use as a banquet room. Inside the bag will be 2 crumbs.
Now that's what I want to see tham start making.

At the store today, I considered opening my Lays bag at the counter, just to let the air out so I could put it in my shopping bag. I've done it in the past, when using a backpack and biking, and didn't just have to get everything to my car.

When the chips are put in the bag they fill the space. Over time and travel they settle and that's why when you open them they only look half full. They're fairly brittle so if they were to stuff them all in the bag to take up all the air space you'd have crumbs not chips. See- PRINGLES. ;)

Pringles are also re-constituted potato grindings. They revert to their natural ground form in some cans.

Mmmmm.... Pringles....
A few years ago when I was living in Florida, a buddy of mine visited his family in Maryland. Before flying back home, he bought a bunch of bags of his favorite regional-brand potato chips (Utz Chips). He brought them on the plan as a carry-on and stored them in the baggage area above his seat.
The bags were packed so tight with air, that halfway through the flight they exploded in the low pressure. This was shortly after Sept 11, 2001 - so you can imagine how freaked out everyone was. Dude says he's lucky he wasn't arrested just for scaring everyone.

If you're interested, I've elaborated a bit and posted that story here.
