iv) Thou shalt not plagerise another bloggers entire article without giving credit or adding to it.
v) Thou shalt not write things that can come back to bite thou in the arse.

vii) Thou shalt blog for at least 2 years before seeing serious money.
viii) Thou shalt not blog unless thou plans to take it seriously.
ix) Thou shalt have a thick skin for criticism and differing of opinion.
x) Thou shalt make an attempt to use proper grammar and spelling.

A few issues with these commandments:
What does #5 mean?
Why should I take blogging seriously?
And in light of #4's misspelling of "plagiarize," what do we do about your breaking of #10? Mild spankings or a full-fledged stoning?

Opinions are like assholes: most of them stink.
Thou shalt link this article, and every article of Sam's that thou enjoys.
So, is this link pimping?
Posted by: Pete Blackwell | March 8, 2006 05:42 AM
You forgot the eleventh: Thou shalt pay homage to Eric Cartman, the sacred conservative sociopath, by smiting a hippie blogger one mighty blow upon the head with a wiffle bat before respectfully debating him/her.

"viii) Thou shalt not blog unless thou plans to take it seriously."
May I respectfully disagree with this one, Sam? Well, whether I may or not, I do.
:-)
I really think there are too many folks blogging who take it (and themselves) much too seriously, specially those whose content sucks dead bunnies through a straw and pontificate about all their wonderful traffice of dumbass groupies who have found a likeminded idiot to affirm their worth.
(No, I am NOT talking about anyone on your blogrolls. Am not. Nuh-uh, no way. :-))
There are more than a few of those out there taking their crap blogs way too seriously.
I KNOW third world county is just a place where I can let the voices in my head out to rant and scream, wonder and ponder, pontificate and polemicize, laugh and ridicule, and just have a plain old good time... Some folks like that kind of content and come back for more abuse. Fine by me, but I don't take myself seriously.
And what's so wrong about link whoring? I happen to think this post:
http://www.thirdworldcounty.us/?p=1830
...deserves some additional attention, and here I am link-whoring it in comments. Will lightning strike me dead?
ZAP! ZOT!
*frazzled, dazed and befuddled*
OK, that was a close one...
:-)

"i) Thou shalt not commit link whoring."
Like I could ever obey *that* commandment. :)
Hmm, but I haven't link whored in a while. I'm overdue.

Glad I am not a religious person!
A Link Whore
Posted by: Ole Blue | March 8, 2006 08:47 AM
Great post Sam! Now lets see who abides by it. Oh, I am religious in the sense I do believe Jesus is my Lord and Savior, but not biased or judgenmental, if that makes sence, I mean I disdain those 'holier than thou' folks. So hypocritica. Anyhow, thought I would say, -A Link Whore! Thats the best analogy I have heard to date.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's Instalanche

LOL. What's an "Instalanche"?
Posted by: Mark B. | March 8, 2006 03:12 PM
How about people with music on their blogs? Is that annoying when you happen to be a link whore like me and use firefox.
See I click on many links and read a site then click the link off, but sometimes my great Jazz music is cut through by some other kind of music.
I do hate that.

Okay, everyone does know that my 10 commandments aren't set in stone like some other 10 commandments, right?
Lol.
Dave D. - #5 refers to if you're going to say something about family, friends, boss, coworker, then it better not be incriminating because you'll be SOL if they find out. And as in seriously, I mean most readers don't enjoy going to a site that posts less than once a month. And, I prefer a spanking, but I write in Canadian style with "s" instead of "z", and sometimes I do it more often than it is correct.
Pete Blackwell - call it what you will. Blogging is nothing, BUT opinion - stinky or not.
Debris Trail - "no kitty, that's a bad kitty", Cartman rocks!
David - same as mentioned above, by serious, I mean what's the point of only posting once a month, or less? It irritates readers out there. And, they don't call it whoring because it's a pretty thing. Link whoring is not cool, but we all do it shamelessly (myself included at times).
Don Surber - excellent, lol.
Mark B. - Described at Bloglossary - Instalanche: A sudden influx of thousands of hits that threatens to crush your server, brought on by a link from Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit.com.
Ole Blue - ack, that does bug me too. Make that a bonus commandment, lol.

I'm a little new to the permalink/trackback concept as I don't use a template for my blog, but do all the coding manually.
But I believe I incorporated your permalink properly on today's Donovan's Blog postings: http://www.donovansblog.com/index.html#ThursdayMarch9th2006
Very funny, by the way - and true.
I've also added your site to my fledgling blogroll - Donovan's Blogroll. I want to build a blogroll with sites which primarily reflect the creative energy of their publishers and aren't just a collection of unfathomable comments and links. The Crazy Rants of Samantha Burns seems to fit that description.
At any rate, I'm hoping you can also add Donovan's Blog to your visitor blogroll.
Thanks - Bill Donovan

Bill Donovan - it's already been done, just waiting on my system to refresh itself and you should show up on my blogroll.
As for trackback info, you can check out my OTA FAQ (the link on the right sidebar that says Get on this list). It might help some. There's also Linkfest Haven who seems to have a lot of info on it, others mention something about wizbang having a trackback system thing or haloscan.
Don't know much about all that as mine is part of my system, but my techie has tried to help as best he can in the OTA FAQ.
As for permalink and comment sections, I'm not technical enough to know what you can do to add those, so I hope you find what you're looking for.
If any of my readers here can help, I'm sure Bill Donovan would appreciate it.

I was going to comment but I started visualizing/thinking of sucking a dead bunny through a straw and forgot what I was going to say.

I don't know if animal necrophilia pushes the envelope on this site or not.
Posted by: Dave D | March 9, 2006 05:22 AM
OK, Sam, I retract my disagreement with your "serious" comment, based on your refinement of "serious"--there I can agree. "Bloggers" who post once a month (or once a YEAR!) just don't get my eyeballs. In fact, there are so very many great blogs out there, I frequently discover I've not been back in way too long a time to one I REALLY don't wanna miss, just cos there are too many excellent blogs to read.
Heck, I can't keep up just skimming my RSS feeds of great blogs (three columns of RSS feeds alone, and growing... *sigh*).
So why should I waste time checking back with a blogger who doesn't post?
Gotcha. Your definition of "serious" is one I can affirm. Thanks for 'splainin' it to me and using a small stick to do it. :-)
